Mobile PC Security Tips: Part I

How to stop your notebook from being stolen

laptop_securityTry thinking of your notebook or mini-note not as a computer but as a pile of cash. Would you leave $800 lying around on a library table or the front seat of your car? How about $300? Chances are you wouldn’t, and that’s because we instinctively realize that’s tantamount to inviting unscrupulous types to help themselves.

And the monetary loss doesn’t even take into account the data (files, photos, videos, etc) that you lose, not to mention the hassle of buying a new device, personalizing the settings and installing all your favorite software.

Protecting your notebook is becoming increasingly important; notebook theft is one of the top three computer crimes along with the spreading of viruses and hacking. The good news is there are some simple things you can do to protect yourself and your property.

Lock it up
Most notebooks come equipped with a Universal Security Slot that allows you to attach it to a heavy or unbreakable object. With locks around for under $30, this is one of the cheapest and most cost effective solutions to deter thieves. A good option for places like hotel rooms, conference rooms, airport waiting areas, and libraries.

Hide it away

Especially if you leave your laptop on the office desk at night, a good idea is to place the notebook in a filing cabinet or other secure, out-of-sight location. Even if the location isn’t lockable, it’ll still keep your device out of sight and make it that much harder for anyone wandering around the deserted office looking for easy pickings.

Disguise it
When traveling with your notebook, either for work or pleasure, don't carry it in a computer case. This makes you an obvious target for would-be thieves. Purchasing a lightweight padded sleeve and carrying your notebook in a regular briefcase or a backpack instead is a much better option.

Tag it
Place hard-to-remove stickers or markings on the notebook where they can be clearly seen. The potential theft value of a device is reduced greatly when additional work is required to remove the identifying marks. Conspicuous identity labels also significantly increase the risk of a potential thief being caught in the act.

Perhaps most importantly of all, be vigil. Though not possible all the time, try to keep your device with you as much as possible – that’s what they’re made for. Stay tuned for the next installment of security tips.
