Back up with Windows Home Server

How to use Windows Home Server for exceptional backup operation

Windows Home Server, WHS, Backup and RestoreWindows Home Server (WHS) will automatically backup and restore your PCs and allow users to share and access files from any machine in the house. WHS also offers remote access to these files and PCs. Even when you are travelling, you can connect to the WHS system from your netbook, even on a browser. In this article let’s explore how to use Microsoft’s well known operating system, WHS. Check this out!

Recently I had posted an article on how to use the inbuilt backup and restore option available in Windows Vista. Hope you found it useful. Let’s get started with WHS now.

The software

To start with, get a copy of Microsoft Windows Home Server from here.

The hardware

I would recommend power efficient VIA ARTiGO A2000 for setting up WHS, but you don’t necessarily need a brand new server. If you have an old computer that meets the following system requirement, you can still install WHS on your old computer.
  • 1.0GHz Intel Pentium 3 (or equivalent) processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 80GB internal hard drive as primary drive
  • 100Mbit/s wired ethernet

Installation

WHS can be installed either using a USB thumb drive or in the traditional way using the DVD. Here I am assuming that you have a DVD drive attached to your system and you have successfully setup your BIOS to boot from your DVD drive. If you don’t have a DVD drive installed on your system, attach an external DVD drive through an USB port. However, if you don’t have access to any DVD drive, see this tutorial to learn how to prepare your normal USB thumb drive as the WHS installation source.

Insert the WHS disc into the DVD drive and reboot your machine. Make sure you have selected first boot device as CD-ROM in the BIOS. You will see the following screen:

Once the setup is complete, install all the required drivers and keep your WHS-powered system ready. In my next post, I’ll show you how to begin with the backup and restore process and some of the pre-requisites so that you can enjoy the features of WHS.
