How to configure Windows Home Server using Windows Home Server Console

Windows Home Server, WHS, Backup and Restore, WHS ConsoleRemote administration is one of the most important features in windows Home Server. The Operating system comes with Windows Home Server Console, which allows you to configure user accounts, shared folders, computer backups, server storage and Windows Home Server Settings.  Let’s check out how.

 

Create user accounts

In my earlier posts, we have explored WHS installation and network driver and Windows Home Server Connector software setup. Hope you found them useful. Once you have successfully completed Windows Home Server Setup and Windows Home Server Connector software, you next task is to add user accounts for different users in your family. To add a user account, follow these steps:

  • From a home computer, right-click the Windows Home Server tray icon, and then click ‘Windows Home Server Console’.

  • Enter the Windows Home Server password, and click ‘Next’.

  • Click the ‘User Accounts’ tab.

  • Click Add, and then enter appropriate values in first name, last name and logon Name. If you wish to enable remote access for the user you are creating, check the ‘Enable Remote Access for this user (strong password required)’ check box and select a suitable option from the combo box. Click ‘Next’ to continue.

  • Enter your password and reconfirm it. If you have selected the ‘Enable Remote Access for this user (strong password required)’ option in the last step, you need to enter a complex password. (characters + numbers + special character). Click ‘Next’ to continue.

  • Set access to the shared folders and click ‘Finish’ to complete the adding user account.

  • Repeat the above steps for each user account you wish to add.

Editing user accounts

Sometimes you may need to edit a user account. To edit a user account, double click the user name and make the required changes.  Click ‘OK’ to save the changes.
