Desktop switcher
Written by Roshi
My husband’s laptop has one of the most cluttered looking desktops in the world. Although his laptop has a 16-inch screen, it is always jam packed with applications shortcuts, folders, image files, music albums, games and videos. If he borrows my Samsung NC20 for even a day, I need to clean its desktop completely of folders and files. If one desktop is not enough for all your files and folders, then split your desktop into nearly 20 parts with Dexpot.
In our earlier blogs, we have written about desktops split into four parts, but those have certain limitations and offer only a few features. Dexpot not only allows you to set up different desktops on your netbook, but also gives you ample options to customize them. These desktops get split within the window and work as different workspaces with individual icons and successfully running apps. Splitting desktop tools is quite common, but Dexpot has the most spontaneous interface and simple tools to manage and customize virtual desktops.

You can download the latest version of Dexpot from its official website for Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista platforms. It is a freeware for private use, but requires a 15-euro license key for commercial use. It is a slim software of 2MB and is easy to install too. Choose your installation language as it is available in a lot of languages. Follow a few easy steps to finish the installation. You can install it to your USB flash drive too. You can launch Dexpot virtual desktops from the start menu or the desktop shortcut. After launching, you will get a Dexpot icon in the system tray to split the desktop into virtual desktops.

Dexpot lets you partition the netbook into different sections. I divided my netbook desktop into an entertainment section with desktop icons for messengers, email shortcuts and media players. Then there is my office section to store office docs, files and folders. Apart from these two workspaces, there is my home desktop compartment where important sticky notes, reminders and desktop apps are present. Another game section is for my husband, so that I don’t have to be bothered about my desktop being cluttered with dozens of his games.

Dexpot excels in the customization options it offers. While other applications allow you to only customize wallpapers and icons, Dexpot can let you personalize almost everything on your desktops. Right click on the Dexpot icon on the system tray and view the dozens of options offered by Dexpot. Each desktop has its own name, icon, wallpaper, screen resolution, shortcuts, applications, and properties. You are even allowed to set rules for each desktop to automatically run a few applications when opened.

It has a desktop manager to manage the virtual desktops and easy preview options for each desktop. You can view all the desktops in a preview window on the top of your original desktop or split the window into multiple desktops at any time while working on Dexpot. It has some unique tools quite different from other virtual desktops programs such as desktop slideshow, windows catalogue and desktop windows to have a quick preview of apps running in individual desktops. You can also personalize these virtual desktops through the settings panel from the right hand side menu.

One desktop is not enough to accommodate all your files and apps, and sometimes you can’t remove them from the desktop, making it cluttered and clumsy. Dexpot can be your ultimate virtual desktop manager with its lean size and sturdy options.
