Hi-Tech Fishing: Part II
In Part I of the Hi-Tech fishing series, we looked at how turning your notebook PC into a GPS navigation device was a cheap and effective way of maximizing your chances out on the water. In this installment, we go even further, turning your notebook into a dual GPS/fishfinder.
The PCFF80, manufactured by CruzPro, is a full-featured dual frequency high resolution PC-based color fishfinder that runs under windows 98, NT, 2000, XP and Vista in both analog and DSP mode (Digital Signal Processing).
Retailing for around US$850, the PCFF80 comes complete with a dual frequency plastic thru-hull depth/temperature transducer, an interface box with RS232 and USB connectors, and Windows software for Win98, Win2K, WinXP and Vista. The full color 1024x768 resolution display offered by your notebook and the PCFF80 will save thousands of dollars over a standard fishfinder with similar output.

Check out the CruzPro site for more technical specifications, but as far as set-up goes it’s a simple matter of mounting the transducer, connecting up the interface box and installing the bundled software onto your notebook. All the features of your Windows OS are available, including multi-tasking, which means you can simultaneously run the PcFF80 fish finder and GPS software we talked about in Part I.

Best of all, the PCFF80 software can be updated via Internet downloads, extending the useful life of the system indefinitely.
