How to record your computer screen online for free

My job occasionally involves screen capturing and screen recording for creating how to guides. I was using Camtasia Studio on my notebook, but when I switched to Samsung NC20 a few months ago, working with Camtasia wasn't very convenient. I had to look for a netbook-friendly alternative and I came across an impressive cloud based screen casting app. Let's explore ScreenToaster here.

ScreenToaster is a cloud based application to make videos and screen casts for free. Being a cloud application, ScreenToaster doesn't need to be downloaded, but you'll need a web browser to perform recording and editing. ScreenToaster lets you download recorded videos and also allows you to share them with your buddies online.

Getting started

First of all, you must be a registered user to use ScreenToaster. The registration process is quite easy and straight forward. To register, visit the ScreenToaster website and click the 'Register' tab.

Fill up the registration form and click the 'Register' button to get registered.

Upon registration, click the confirmation link sent to your mail box to activate your account.

Start recording

To record, login to ScreenToaster and click the 'Record' tab to start recording.

From the Settings area, select whether you want to record your full screen (full desktop) or a portion of your screen (rectangular area). Select an appropriate audio option and click the 'Record' button or press 'ALT + S' keys to begin recording.

Click the 'Stop Recording' button to stop recording. Once the recording is stopped, ScreenToaster will instantly play the recorded video is the integrated player.

Edit videos

Upon recording, ScreenToaster offers a bit of editing options, which will allow you to add subtitles, remove audio from background, set thumbnail for video and record audio. Use the appropriate editing option from the edit video section.

Upload videos

Once you have recorded and edited a video, you may like to upload it either to the ScreenToaster video channel or to YouTube. To upload your video to ScreenToaster in the high quality mode, click the 'Upload to ScreenToaster (High Quality)' button and add some video description. Select an appropriate privacy option and click 'Upload'.

To upload your video to YouTube, click the 'Upload to YouTube' button. Enter your login details, video description and click 'Upload'.

Save your video

ScreenToaster lets its users download their recorded videos to their local machine as .mov and .swf files. To download your recorded video file, click either the Save as .mov file or Save as .swf file button.

ScreenToaster will convert the video file and download it to your local computer.

Video editing and screen casting software were always well known for their resource hogging behavior and higher system requirement, which directly limit the use of such applications on light computing devices such as netbooks. Now, making video casting is so easy and convenient. It's totally free and worth trying.
