Mobiln 2.0 Beta
Written by Timothy
Of all the Linux distributions in all the world the flavor of the moment (certainly for the last few days anyway) is the beta of Moblin 2.0. Which is specifically designed for ... netbooks... according to the promotion video (embedded after the jump). Watching the video one thing struck me regarding the user interface that I had been thinking about a for awhile: Why can't the apps and the browser be part of the same UI?
Or at the very least "appear" to be part of the same UI. The iPhone comes pretty close in making the UI of the local apps and the browser in terms of windows and buttons, but it looks like from the video that Moblin goes a step further having the apps running in the desktop space and then the browser seemingly framed by the same desktop space. I suppose I'll have to get a look a the new Moblin myself to see how well that's actually done.

In my mind you could go a step further.. and have the controls/windows/frames part of the UI appear to be the same for all the applications and browser experience and also make them completely disappear when you are using controls of the app itself and not the windows/frames controls. Maybe when you move the mouse to the outside right of the screen then the UI would appear. You could do the same with touch screen devices.
Android seems to a variation on this concept but you can still see the tab to open the UI running along the bottom of the screen.
For me less UI is better and I think blurring the lines between cloud and local apps certainly couldn't hurt either. Here's the full Mobile 2.0 Beta video for you to check out:
